Helen Spencer-Wallace is an artist, creative coder, vocalist, and Contemporary Alexander Technique teacher based in Portland, Oregon.

Art

I make works of sonic and personal presence. I work in installation and performance, often both at once. I mess with inconsistent and multiple selves, explicit deception, and being a scary beautiful digital choir. My solo work centers on extended vocal technique and nonlinear song manipulation. Most of my work these days uses presence sensors in concert with digital and traditional methods of composition.

Lineages

I am honored to work in keeping with the lineage of three traditions that shape and guide my work. Thank you to Rik Masterson, my vocal teacher and connection to Pandit Pran Nath, Terry Riley, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, and all the others in North Indian classical music’s Kirana Gharana tradition. Thank you to Robyn Avalon, my Alexander trainer and connection to the lineage of FM Alexander passed down through Marjorie Barstow, Bruce Fertman, and all the others. Thank you to Meshi Chavez, my Butoh teacher and connection to the lineage of Tatsumi Hijikata passed down through Natsu Nakajima and Tatsumi Hijikata passed down through Natsu Nakajima and all the others. Thank you to Linda K Johnson, Jesse Mejía, Tracy Broyles, Mizu Desierto, and all of my teachers, too numerous to list here.
